Defense Department Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Troops

The internal investigation determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only shared information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the mission. He added that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
