The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any major honors show nears, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
