Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to contest specific calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
